How to Turn Your Poems into Treasure Hunts with Sue-Shane Tsomondo

We know about the 5 senses, touch, hearing, sight, taste and smell, but scientists say human beings could actually have anywhere between 5 and 53 senses. This means there are many ways for us to experience the world and even more ways for us to tell others about those experiences. Poetry is one of the special ways we can share our thoughts and experiences with others. A good poem is a like a treasure hunt. In this workshop for 11-14 year olds, you will learn how to build a map and leave clues so a reader can find important hidden meanings (treasures).   

Sue-Shane Tsomondo is a writer, arts administrator and occasional writing instructor based in Mohkinstsis. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Sue-Shane’s writing is a lifelong exploration of diasporan guilt, blackness and womanhood. She has previously performed for Woolfs’ Voices and Single Onion. In 2019, Sue-Shane founded a literary arts platform, Sue’s Stokvel, to highlight the work of racialized writers across the globe. Sue-Shane received the Rozsa Foundation Emerging Arts Manager Award in 2024 and has appeared on the cover of the Calgary Journal and on CBC Radio for her work with Sue’s Stokvel. 

REGISTRATION REQUIRED. This is an inclusive workshop for youth aged 11-14 years old. Participation is $25 per family or no charge with our 'Fair Entry Ticket' option. Please include the first name and age of each child when registering. The workshop includes a book for every child to take home and keep.
